Ramble Shipping help

Getting help

How do I get help with a shipment?

If you need to reach Ramble about a shipment, sign in and open that shipment’s page. You can reach Ramble from there in two ways:

  • If your instrument is damaged or lost, or something is wrong or missing, choose Report a problem on the shipment page. You can report a problem until the end of the 7th day after pickup, or after delivery for a shipment to an address.
  • For anything else, write to Ramble in Messages with Ramble on the shipment page.

Ramble sees your message with the shipment’s photos and history, so you don’t need to explain which shipment it is. Ramble replies on the same page and emails you when it does.

How do I get help with my account or anything else?

If you need help signing in, with your account, or with how Ramble Shipping works, email Ramble’s support team at support@therambleco.com. If your question is about a shipment, include the shipment’s number, such as #1071.

How does my shop get help?

If your shop needs to reach Ramble about a shipment it’s handling, open the shipment’s page and write to Ramble in Messages with Ramble. For anything else, such as your shop’s setup, your fees or your payouts, email Ramble’s support team at support@therambleco.com.

Getting started

What is Ramble Shipping?

Ramble Shipping is Ramble’s way to ship an instrument through music shops. You drop it off at a partner music shop near you, which checks it in, photographs it, packs it and hands it to the carrier. It goes to a partner music shop near the receiver, who collects it there, or to an address.

How does a shipment work?

  1. You book online: what you’re shipping, the drop-off shop and where it’s going.
  2. Both shops accept the shipment, and Ramble emails you the drop-off shop’s address.
  3. You bring your instrument to the drop-off shop. You don’t need a box.
  4. The drop-off shop photographs your instrument, packs it and measures the box. Ramble buys the label, and the drop-off shop prints it. That’s when you’re charged.
  5. The drop-off shop hands the box to the carrier, and you can track it on your shipment page.
  6. The pickup shop photographs the box before opening it, then your instrument, and keeps it until the receiver collects it with their pickup code.

A shipment to an address has no pickup shop: it ends when the carrier delivers it.

Who does what on a shipment?

  • The sender brings the instrument to the drop-off shop.
  • The drop-off shop checks it in, does any work booked there, packs it and hands the box to the carrier.
  • The pickup shop receives the box, does any work booked there and hands the instrument to the receiver.
  • The receiver collects it at the pickup shop, or gets it at their address.
  • Ramble runs the booking, the payments and the tracking, and settles any problem.

When you ship to yourself, you’re both the sender and the receiver.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You sign up to book a shipment and follow it on your shipment page. When someone else is at the other end, they sign up too, to accept it.

Where can I ship?

Within the US. Both shops, and any address it’s delivered to, have to be in the US. That includes the address on your own label.

What can I ship?

One instrument, amp or other piece of music gear in one box. The drop-off shops you’re offered are the ones that take your kind of gear.

The packed box has to be one a carrier will take. If no carrier takes a box that size, the booking says so, and offers another drop-off shop or a different box size.

Every box also has to meet the carrier’s own rules for what it carries. If the drop-off shop finds something that means it shouldn’t ship, such as missing parts, it stops the shipment, and Ramble decides what happens next.

Can I ship more than one instrument?

Each shipment is one item in one box on one label. To ship two instruments, book two shipments.

How much does it cost?

A shipment’s bill has up to four parts: shipping, the drop-off shop’s packing fee, the pickup shop’s receiving fee, and any work you book at a shop, such as a setup. Each shop sets its own prices, and you see each one before you book. A shipment to an address has no receiving fee.

Shipping is quoted as a range when you book, because the drop-off shop measures the real box later. Ramble’s protection is included in the shipping price.

When am I charged?

When Ramble buys the label and the drop-off shop prints it, after the shop has packed and measured the box. Nothing is charged when you book or when you drop your instrument off.

If the measured box costs more than the range you were quoted, whoever pays for shipping approves the new price first. If it costs less, they pay the lower price. When two people share the bill, each is charged on their own card for their own part.

How will I hear about my shipment?

By email and in the app, such as when both shops accept it, when the carrier has the box and when it’s ready to collect. Ramble doesn’t send text messages. Your shipment page shows who has your instrument at each step.

Booking

Can I send an instrument to someone else?

Yes. Start a shipment with Me to someone else and send them a proposal: what you’re shipping, your drop-off shop and who pays which part of the bill. When they accept, they pick a pickup shop or an address.

If you don’t have their email address, copy the proposal’s link from your shipment page and send it to them yourself. The link works for 14 days.

Can someone else send an instrument to me?

Yes. Start a shipment with Someone else to me, and Ramble emails the sender your invite. You agree who pays each line of the bill, and they drop it off at a partner shop near them.

Can we split the cost?

Yes. Whoever sends the proposal picks who pays each part of the bill: shipping, packing and receiving. Each person pays their own part on their own card, and work booked at a shop is paid by whoever booked it. The split can’t change once the proposal is sent.

Can it go to a home address?

Yes. The carrier can deliver it from the drop-off shop to a home address. It can’t be sent from a home: every shipment starts at a partner music shop.

When it goes to the receiver’s home, the sender sees only the town and the state.

What if there’s no partner shop near me?

Enter your ZIP code on the Ramble Shipping home page to see how far the nearest partner shop is. If there’s none within 50 miles, choose Tell me when there’s a shop near me and Ramble emails you when there is.

When you book, you can also pick a partner shop farther away, or choose Request a shop and name a music shop you’d like to ship with. Ramble contacts the shop, and emails you if it joins.

Can I book work on my instrument, like a setup?

Yes. When you book, add services at the drop-off shop, such as a setup or a string change, with a note for the shop. The receiver can book services at the pickup shop. You can also add one later with Add a service on your shipment page, until that shop has finished its work on the shipment.

You pay the shop’s price plus Ramble’s markup. If the shop can’t do a service, you aren’t charged for it, or it’s refunded.

Can I change my booking?

Once it’s booked, the item, its declared value and the shops you picked can’t change. To change them, cancel the shipment before the drop-off shop starts checking it in, and book it again. Nothing is charged.

Drop-off and packing

Do I pack it myself?

No. The drop-off shop packs it in a box with at least 2 inches of cushioning on every side, and photographs it in the box before sealing it.

You don’t need to bring a box.

What happens when I drop it off?

The drop-off shop finds your shipment and photographs your instrument with you there: the front, the back, the serial number or label, and at least one detail. Those photos are the record of what you handed over, and you and the receiver see them on your shipment page.

If the shop finds something you should know about, such as wear the booking didn’t mention, it asks you and the receiver to approve it before your instrument goes on.

How does the shop pack it?

Every partner shop packs to Ramble’s packing standard:

  • A new or near-new box with no holes or crushed corners, rated for the packed weight.
  • Your instrument in its case or bag, or wrapped, with at least 2 inches of cushioning on every side, top and bottom, so nothing moves when the box is shaken.
  • A case never shipped without an outer box.
  • Three strips of tape across the top and the bottom.

The shop photographs your instrument in the box, and the top layer in place, before it seals the box, and the sealed box with the label on before the box goes to the carrier.

What if the packed box costs more than I was quoted?

Whoever pays for shipping is asked on their shipment page before anything is charged. They can choose Approve and pay, pick another service that costs no more than their quote, or choose Don’t ship it and tell Ramble why. Nobody is charged a price above their quote that they weren’t asked about.

I already have a shipping label. Can I use it?

Yes. Say you already have a label when you book. The drop-off shop checks your instrument in, packs it and puts your label on the box, and the box goes to the address on the label. You pay for packing and any work you book at the shop, and nothing for shipping.

Add the label to your shipment page, or bring it to the shop, printed or on your phone. The shop doesn’t take your instrument without it.

Ramble doesn’t cover a box on your own label. The shop’s photos show how it was packed and sealed.

What if I don’t drop it off?

You’re reminded 3 and 7 days after both shops accept the shipment. If it isn’t dropped off within 14 days, the shipment is cancelled, and nothing is charged.

Can I take it to a different shop?

Only the drop-off shop you booked can check it in. Until it starts checking it in, you can cancel and book again with another partner shop, or that shop can book a new shipment for you at its counter.

Tracking and pickup

How do I track my shipment?

Your shipment page shows who has your instrument at each step. Once the carrier has the box, it also shows the carrier’s status, the city it was last scanned in, the day the carrier expects to deliver it, and a link to the carrier’s own tracking page.

You and the receiver are emailed the tracking number once the box is on its way.

How long does shipping take?

It depends on the shipping service. When you book, each service shows its price range and its delivery days. The drop-off shop also takes time to check your instrument in, do any work you booked and pack it.

What’s a pickup code?

A 6-digit code the receiver gets by email and on their shipment page when the instrument is ready at the pickup shop. The shop types it in at the counter before it hands the instrument over, and photographs the handover.

Can someone else pick it up?

Yes. Whoever has the six-digit pickup code can collect it. The receiver gets the code by email and in the app when it’s ready, and can pass it on.

Can I look my instrument over before I take it?

Yes. Look it over at the counter. If something’s wrong, tell the pickup shop before it hands the instrument over: the shop puts the shipment on hold, and Ramble decides what happens next.

What if nobody picks it up?

The receiver is reminded 3 and 7 days after it’s ready, and the sender is told at 7 days. If it’s still there after 10 business days, Ramble contacts the receiver. There’s no storage fee.

What if my shipment is late?

If the box hasn’t arrived 10 business days after the day the carrier expected to deliver it, Ramble looks into it, and you and the receiver are told the day Ramble decides by. If the carrier reports a problem first, such as a failed delivery, you’re told then.

You can also use Report a problem on your shipment page at any time.

Cancelling and refunds

Can I cancel?

  • Before the drop-off shop starts checking it in: the sender or the receiver chooses Cancel shipment on their shipment page. Nothing is charged, and there’s no cancellation fee.
  • After check-in starts, and before the carrier has the box: message Ramble from your shipment page, and Ramble hands your instrument back or cancels. If the label was already bought, whoever called it off still pays for the drop-off shop’s packing and any work it finished, and gets the rest back.
  • Once the carrier has the box, it can’t be cancelled.

How do refunds work?

Ramble makes refunds when it settles a problem or cancels a shipment, and decides each part of the bill. Money goes back to the card that paid it: Ramble doesn’t give credits.

A box that’s only late isn’t refunded. A lost or damaged instrument is paid for through a claim, not a refund.

Can I send it back after I’ve collected it?

A shipment has no return of its own. To send an instrument back, book a new shipment the other way. If it arrived damaged or wrong, report a problem first: Ramble decides what happens, and pays for any trip back it books.

I bought the instrument, and it isn’t as described. Can Ramble help?

Ramble Shipping ships the instrument, but it isn’t part of the sale, so it can’t refund the price you paid. If it arrived different from the drop-off shop’s photos, report a problem from your shipment page.

Damage, loss and problems

What happens if my instrument is lost or damaged?

If it’s lost or damaged between drop-off and pickup, Ramble refunds up to the value you declare. You’ll need proof of its value, like a receipt or an appraisal.

The shops’ photos show where it happened: the drop-off shop takes them when you drop it off and when it packs it, and the pickup shop takes them again when it arrives. Use Report a problem on your shipment page.

This covers a box on a label Ramble buys. A box on your own label isn’t covered.

What’s the declared value?

What you say your instrument is worth, entered when you book. Ramble refunds up to it, so declare what your instrument is worth. The booking shows the most you can declare for one box.

It can’t change after booking. To change it, cancel before the drop-off shop starts checking your instrument in, and book again.

How do I report a problem?

Use Report a problem on your shipment page. It’s open from when the first shop accepts the shipment until the end of the 7th day after pickup. On a shipment to an address, the 7 days count from when the carrier delivers it.

Only you and Ramble see your report. If your instrument is lost or damaged, on a label Ramble bought, the report also opens a claim.

After the 7 days, you can still choose Message Ramble on your shipment page.

What happens after I report a problem?

Ramble reviews it with the shops’ photos and the shipment’s record, and tells you what happens next, such as a refund, a repair at a partner music shop, or a claim payment. A report doesn’t stop the shipment: it carries on unless Ramble stops it.

For a lost or damaged instrument, its owner adds proof of its value on their claim page, and Ramble pays up to the declared value. The owner is the sender, unless Ramble names the receiver.

Is a box on my own label covered?

No. Ramble’s promise covers a box on a label Ramble buys. On your own label, the drop-off shop still photographs your instrument when you drop it off, in the box, and sealed with your label on, and those photos are your record.

For shops

What does my shop do on a shipment?

  • As the drop-off shop: accept the shipment, check the instrument in with four photos, do any services booked with you, pack it to Ramble’s packing standard, measure the box, print the label Ramble buys and hand the box to the carrier.
  • As the pickup shop: accept the shipment, photograph the box before you open it and the instrument after, do any services booked with you, and hand the instrument over when the receiver gives you their pickup code.

How does my shop join?

Choose My shop is interested and find your shop on Google, then set it up: your shop’s details, the services you offer and their prices, the carriers you hand boxes to, Ramble’s packing standard, your insurance for customers’ gear in your shop, and payouts through Stripe.

Ramble reviews your shop and emails you within 2 business days. Customers can pick your shop once Ramble approves it.

What does it cost to join?

Nothing. Joining is free, and you’re paid your own packing and receiving fees. If Ramble settles a problem with a shipment by refunding the customer for your work, such as when your shop caused it, Ramble can hold that fee or take it back.

Do I set my own prices?

Yes. You set your packing fee, your receiving fee and your price for each service. Ramble pays them to you, and Ramble’s margin is the markup it adds to the shipping label and to services.

Can I turn a shipment down?

Yes. Every shipment waits for your shop to accept it, and you see what the job pays first. To turn one down, give a reason: the customers are told, and nothing is charged.

Who handles damage in transit?

Ramble handles it for a box on a label Ramble bought: while the carrier has it, Ramble reviews the claim with the photos the shops took and refunds the gear’s owner. For a box on the sender’s own label, the sender claims with that label’s carrier, with your photos as evidence. While the gear is at your shop, your shop is responsible for it: from check-in until you hand the box to the carrier, and from delivery until the receiver collects it.

When am I paid?

Every Monday, Ramble makes one Stripe transfer to your shop’s account for every job that’s due: delivered, and past the 7 days customers have to report a problem. Stripe pays it into your bank on the weekly or monthly schedule you choose.

Do I see my customers?

Yes. Your Customers page lists the person at your end of each shipment you accept, with their contact details. You can export the list as a CSV.
